Wilfred I. Myers | ![]()
Wilfred Irvin Myers, the son of Frank M. Myers (1897-1968) [PHOTO] and Marie Magdaline Didion (1902-1993), was born in 1920 in Marshall County, West Virginia. He is the great-great-grandson of the immigrant, August Myers, born in Germany in 1807. Wilfred and his younger brother, Jack, grew up on Boggs Run, in Marshall County. Their family home was just down, and across the road, from the Moses Bell home, and just above the Albert Knollinger homestead. |

The Myers' Home was built by Wilfred's grandfather, William Myers.

Although Wilfred was supposed to go to Union High School in Benwood, he graduated from Sherrard High School. In order to get to Union High, he had to walk miles down Boggs Run and then through the old, dark, Boggs Run Tunnel that came out in Benwood. From there, he had to catch the trolley and go to high school. This proved too daunting to Wilfred and he played hooky after the first day. He decided to go to Sherrard, and when he was old enough, he bought a car that he managed to get up Boggs Run Hill every day. He graduated in the Sherrard High School Class of 1938, along with Robert Conners, Wilda Hinerman, Genevieve Burkhart, Vera Wilson, Helen Burris, Helen Scherwinski, William Muldrew, Glen Morris, Ted Gamble, Paul Garvin, William Webb, and Harold Jones. His brother, Jack, graduated from Sherrard High two years later.
Following his graduation from high school, until he went to war, Wilfred worked as a carpenter apprentice for Sun Construction.
During World War II, Wilfred I. Myers served in Company "D" 182nd Infantry, 1st Batallion Americal Division. He served for three years and was in the battles of Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Lyete, Cebu, and the Phillipines. He was awarded the Bronze Star for "meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations." See Bronze Star Award. Displayed on a wall in his home are his Medals and Other Awards
When he came home from the war, Wilfred worked for Sun Construction for about one year, then he went to work for Earl Orum and Lloyd Postlewait as a Union Carpenter.
